Portable fire extinguishers are the simplest fire protection in a building and the most often neglected. NFPA 10, the Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers, sets up to four layers of inspection, testing, and maintenance for a unit, depending on its type: a monthly look, an annual maintenance, an internal examination on a six-year or five-year cycle, and a hydrostatic test of the cylinder on a five- or twelve-year cycle. Nonrechargeable units skip the last two and are retired at twelve years instead. This article covers what each layer involves, who can do it, how extinguishers have to be placed and mounted, and what the record has to show.
Intervals below follow the 2022 edition of NFPA 10. Your Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) enforces a specific edition, and some states add their own licensing for extinguisher service. Confirm both before building a program around them.

The monthly inspection
The monthly inspection is a visual check, and NFPA 10 lets the building owner or the owner's agent perform it. The person confirms the extinguisher is in its designated place, that nothing blocks access or view, that the pressure gauge reads in the operable range, that the unit is full by weight or heft, that there is no obvious damage, corrosion, or leakage, that the tamper seal is intact and the pull pin in place, and that the nozzle is clear. Any unit that fails any item is removed and replaced with a unit of the same rating while it is serviced.
The inspection is recorded either on the tag, with the initials and date, or in an electronic record that identifies the unit and the date. NFPA 10 also allows electronic monitoring to replace the physical monthly check where the monitoring system confirms the same conditions. Records are kept for twelve months.
Annual maintenance
Maintenance is a thorough examination by a certified person: the mechanical parts, the extinguishing agent, and the expelling means, done to the manufacturer's service manual. The tamper seal is replaced and the pull pin checked, and a new maintenance tag or label records the month and year and the person and agency that did the work. Where a unit needs recharging, the recharge follows the same certification requirement, and a verification collar goes around the neck of the cylinder after any internal examination or recharge so the next technician can see it was done.
Internal examination and hydrostatic testing
The internal examination and the hydrostatic test are keyed to the extinguisher type and the shell material, which is why two units on the same wall can be due in different years. Stored-pressure extinguishers on a twelve-year hydrostatic cycle, which includes dry chemical units with mild steel, brazed brass, or aluminum shells and the clean agent types, get an internal examination every six years and a hydrostatic test every twelve. Stainless steel dry chemical units, along with water, wet chemical, foam, and carbon dioxide units, are on a five-year hydrostatic cycle, and the internal look happens at that test. Cartridge-operated dry chemical units are examined internally at every annual maintenance because the agent is not under pressure between uses. Nonrechargeable units are never examined or tested; they are removed from service no later than twelve years after the manufacture date and replaced.
Hydrostatic testing requires trained people with suitable equipment and facilities, and the test result is marked on the cylinder with the date and the tester's identity. A unit that fails is condemned and destroyed so it cannot go back into service.
Placement and mounting
Inspection also covers whether the extinguisher is where it should be. NFPA 10 limits the travel distance to the nearest extinguisher: 75 feet for Class A hazards, 30 or 50 feet for Class B depending on the hazard and the extinguisher's rating, and 30 feet from cooking equipment for the Class K unit in a commercial kitchen. Units weighing 40 pounds or less are mounted with the top no more than 5 feet above the floor; heavier units no more than 3.5 feet; and every unit keeps at least 4 inches between its bottom and the floor. Extinguishers in cabinets or out of the line of sight need signs pointing to them.
What the record has to show
For each extinguisher: the type, rating, and location; the manufacture date on the shell; the last monthly inspection; the last annual maintenance with the servicing agency; the last internal examination and recharge; and the last hydrostatic test. The AHJ reads the tags on the walk-through and asks for the records behind them. A contractor that tracks each unit by barcode, with its manufacture date driving the six-year and twelve-year clocks, produces those records without a filing cabinet; the extinguisher route article covers that side, and the extinguisher trade page shows the forms.
Common questions
Can the owner do the annual maintenance?
No. NFPA 10 requires a certified person for maintenance and recharging, and trained people certified by an organization the AHJ accepts for hydrostatic testing. The monthly inspection is the owner's to do.
Does a new extinguisher need maintenance in its first year?
Yes. The annual maintenance clock starts at installation, and the first internal examination and hydrostatic test dates run from the manufacture date on the shell.
What happens to a unit that fails the monthly inspection?
It comes out of service and a unit of equal or greater rating goes in its place until the original is serviced and returned.
