Emergency lighting and exit signs are the part of a life safety system that only matters once, in the dark, with the power out. NFPA 101, the Life Safety Code, requires them to be tested on a schedule that proves the batteries will carry the load when that moment comes. The tests are short and simple, and they are missed constantly, which is why they show up on so many fire department citations. This article covers the intervals, the two kinds of test, the allowance for self-testing units, and the record the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) expects.
The requirements below follow the 2021 edition of NFPA 101, section 7.9 for emergency lighting and 7.10 for exit signs. The AHJ enforces a specific edition, and healthcare occupancies also answer to their accreditor.

The monthly 30-second test
Every battery-operated emergency light is switched to battery power for at least 30 seconds each month, at intervals of 30 days, to confirm the transfer works and the lamps light. For most units that means pressing the test button on the fixture. The test is recorded with the unit identified, the date, and the result. A unit that fails is repaired or replaced, and the failure is a deficiency until it is.
The annual 90-minute test
Once a year each unit runs on battery for a continuous 1.5 hours and has to stay lit for the whole period. This is the test that finds tired batteries: a unit that passes a 30-second test in March can go dark at 40 minutes in the annual. On a large building the annual test is a scheduled event, usually done by circuit or by floor with the building occupied, and a battery that fails the 90 minutes is replaced and retested.
Self-testing units
NFPA 101 allows self-testing and self-diagnostic units to replace the manual monthly test, provided the unit performs its own 30-second test at least monthly and shows the result on an indicator. The person doing the inspection then checks the indicator visually each month rather than pressing the button on every fixture. The annual 1.5-hour test still happens, and its result is confirmed against the unit's indicator. Computer-based self-testing systems, which report from every fixture to a central panel, satisfy the monthly requirement with a report that is reviewed and kept.
Exit signs
Exit signs are inspected visually every month to confirm the illumination source is working. Signs with battery backup are tested on the same schedule as emergency lights, 30 seconds monthly and 1.5 hours annually, and the same self-testing allowances apply. Externally illuminated signs depend on the emergency lighting that lights them, so a failed fixture near a sign is a sign problem too.
Records
The Life Safety Code requires written records of the tests, kept by the owner and available to the AHJ. Each record identifies the unit, the date, the type of test, and the result. Fire inspectors ask for the last twelve months; accreditors in healthcare read the same records against their own standards. A record kept on the unit itself, as a tag, is common for the monthly test; the annual test is usually recorded centrally with the failed units and their repairs listed.
Who performs the tests
NFPA 101 does not require a licensed contractor for the monthly and annual tests, and many owners do the monthly test with facility staff. Contractors that service the rest of the building's fire protection often take on emergency lighting because it fits the same visits and the same report: the same technician walks the floor for extinguishers, exit signs, and emergency lights on one route. Common questions
Does a 30-second test every month meet the annual requirement?
No. The 1.5-hour test is a separate annual requirement, and it is the one that finds weak batteries.
Can the monthly tests be spaced unevenly?
The Code specifies 30-day intervals. Testing on roughly the same day each month keeps the record defensible.
What about a building with a generator?
Where emergency lighting runs off an emergency generator, the generator is tested under NFPA 110, monthly under load, and the emergency lighting circuits are confirmed as part of that program.
